Overdenture Dental Implants

This week I was searching for things to inform my readers about when it came to dental implants.  I know there are a number of people that have dentures.  There are so many reasons why people have to get dentures; accidents, periodontal disease, financial situations, etc.  It might be more cost effective to remove teeth rather than to restore them.

When teeth are removed and dentures placed they are tissue supported.  The denture is supported only by the gums.  When you chew all the biting pressure will eventually transmit through the dentures and then out to the soft tissue, according to which can become troublesome over time.

To create a more stable bite dentist will usually place somewhere between two and four implants in a patients mouth.  The dentist will place an attachment system that joins the implants to the denture by a snap down design.  Patients with overdentures implant supported can still remove their dentures if they wish.  There will be no need for adhesives to hold dentures in place.  Dentures that are implant supported are much more stable and functional than traditional tissue supported dentures.

This picture is a patient of Dr. Caputo’s where he place four dental implants to support her denture in place.  The little round ball at the exposed part  of the implant is what actually snaps into the denture for support.
